Fenway Crosses The Rainbow Bridge

Fenway crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday very peacefully in our arms at home. Our wonderful vet came to the house to assist in his transition. Fen valiantly battled kidney failure for the past year, having almost died last June. However, acupuncture and Eastern medicine administered by our vet brought him through and we were blessed having him in our lives for many more months. He suffered a seizure Tuesday, became very weak and could not stand or walk without our help; and after consultation with our vet and some soul searching, we chose to give him one final gift - a gentle release from the confines of his failing body.

Fenway was my heart dog. I fell in love with him the moment I saw him baiting his mom with a bone, while his siblings nursed. That says it all about it personality. He filled a large space for such a little guy. He was my agility companion for years and the bond we developed was strong. He was the best "big brother" to all his siblings, Border and Norfolk alike. He had a mellow, easy-going personality (except when cats and squirrels were near) and never demanded attention but freely gave his love.

For the first time in 15 years, 16 if you count my sister's Border Millie (Fen's half sister), we are a house without a Border. I am not sure what the future will bring, since we have two young Norfolk terriers who have shared our home with the Borders these last few years, but the absence of a Border is difficult.

Run free, happy and with vitality my little man, once again chasing those squirrels, barking all you want. Play with those who went before you, Camden, Hanny, Millie, Sable and Sandy and all the beloved Borders on the other side of the bridge. There is a huge hole in our lives and hearts and you will be greatly missed.

Cookie Party Time!

My grandson hosted a cookie party for his little friends. Everyone had a blast and all the moms and grandparents had smiles on their faces all day. My daughter and Jen are far braver than I ever was when it comes to putting cookies and icing in the hands of little ones, which is all for the better -- these are the days where memories are made. It was so fun meeting everyone and I love taking pics of little ones. A big thanks to Jen and Amy for a memorable time!

I had the privilege of taking photos again this year of two little ones I have been photographing since their births (quite literally for the little guy since I actually photographed his delivery!) They are the sweetest kids. Both were so delightful and engaging during the session, as we walked around Antioch park to find locations that were not taken by other photographers. They were little troopers!

I had the pleasure of doing my niece's second session of senior photos on a beautiful autumn day in Kansas City. She got her hair cut in a cute, short style between our first session in July and this one.

We visited the always beautiful and serene Kauffman Gardens and a very old urban area in Kansas City. Perfect day!

This is only a fraction of the photos, so she and her parents are going to have a hard time choosing her favorites, I'm sure.

My niece is not only beautiful but very comfortable both in front of and behind the camera lens.

Kansas Flint Hills Photography

I and my sister and her photographer husband drove a couple of hours south of Overland Park in May to stay on a ranch and have a photography weekend in the Flint Hills of Kansas. I'm late getting these photos on my blog but my cooking classes and Master Gardner classes have been filling my time!

We stayed in a ranch house owned by Charlie Pilgrim, outside of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. He was a gracious host, taking us on a tour of the ranch right after we got there. We had to use his "duck mobile" water and all terrain vehicle to ford a high stream to get to the cattle grazing area. His trusty, beautiful and sweet setter Gracie, was our roving companion.

Here's a photo of the stream, which was high, due to heavy spring rains. In fact, it rained our first night there and the stream was impassable the remainder of the weekend.

Duckmobile - it was cold and windy, so my sis was bundled up while I photographed Dave, the photographer, photographing lupines.

You can see the rolling prairies in the background. The scenery in the Flint Hills is majestic. The cattle were not too sure about the intruders

The next day we visited the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. It is part of our National Park system and has a well maintained house built by Stephen Jones in 1878. They have a good video about the tallgrass prairie, which has vanished across most of North America,

Below are photos of the type of stone fences you see all across the Flint Hills.

Stephen Jones house on the Spring Hill Farm and Stock Ranch. Most of the magnificent houses built in the late 1800s in this ranching area are in disrepair. Even though I've lived in Kansas most of my life, I was surprised to find houses of this grandeur on the prairie.

The preserves has several miles of trails. You can see the rocky nature of the land. The scenery changed with every bend in the path.

Famous Chase County Courthouse at twilight. It's the oldest operating courthouse in Kansas, located in Chase County.

Loved the old time mailboxes in the US Post Office in Cottonwood Falls.

We went back to the Tallgrass Prairie schoolhouse in the evening to try and capture some sunset photos. The storms blew in to the east and we were able to capture some rainbows and dramatic clouds. We learned later that tornados were only about 20 miles to the east. It was the following weekend that a tornado destroyed Joplin, Missouri.

Overland Park Arboretum Summer 2011 Photos

The Overland Park Arboretum is beautiful every month of the year, regularly changing its colors. However, when the Monet Garden is in full bloom during the summer months, the garden is fabulous with eye-catching color combinations. The Master Gardeners of Overland Park do a great job designing, planting and tending this garden. Many thanks to them. Enjoy!

Speaking of Monet, I saw Monet's Water Lilies at the Nelson Art Gallery a couple of weeks ago. They are owned by three individual museums and are rarely displayed together. I was expecting small paintings and was surprised to see three huge paintings, each over 5 feet long and nearly as tall. The exhibit was well done and the impact of the paintings as you walked around the corner into the viewing area was stunning.

Finally, a photo of the Arboretum's herb garden. It is delightfully fragrant and grows larger each year with more herbs and seating added. A wonderful spot to sit and relax!

Niece's Senior Pictures

My gorgeous niece is a high school senior and asked me to take her senior photos. I was thrilled! She is a natural both in front of and behind a camera lens. We are doing a couple of photos shoots in different locations but wanted to get these done now since she is getting her hair cut short!! We had a break in the hot, humid weather yesterday - only 89 - so out we went! There is a new park near her house that was perfect, stream and all.

Overland Park Arboretum Summer Photos

I photographed a dedication ceremony yesterday at the Overland Park Arboretum and for fun, took some additional photos of the gardens in full summer splendor. If you live in Kansas City and haven't been to the Arboretum recently, it is gorgeous. It gets better and better each year. The new Serenity Point, that dedicated yesterday, offers a stunning view of the surrounding grounds.

This was a weekend of fun. My sister, her husband, son and grandson came to Kansas City for the graduation party of my other nephew. The little one is 6 and was delightful. You'd think in a house of adults, he would be bored but he found many ways to entertain himself. Love family times!

A College Graduation!

Today was my nephew's graduation from K-State. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design with an emphasis in animation. He is amazingly creative. I recall my sister saying that he shaded trees several shades of green when he was a toddler. When asked "why" (since most kids use one color green), he responded that "I see them that way". Lots of relatives came from far and wide and we all had a very enjoyable time. Here are a few pics and a huge CONGRATULATIONS to one of my favorite guys.

I had so much fun Saturday photographing my niece and her date in their prom finery. She was beautiful and he was handsome. Our youngest Norfolk terrier is loving the snow we've had in Kansas. He would play outside all day if we let him. However, with the frigid temperatures recently, we don't let him have his way (even though we spoil him in general and he's come to expect it!)

More Winter Fun at the Overland Park Arboretum

We bundled up and visited the Arboretum after our second big snow this January (4th snowiest January in Kansas City). We saw families with little ones having fun in the snow and fellow photographers.

The sky was blue, as opposed to the snow photo shoot a couple of weeks ago, when the clouds were grey and featureless. That creates opportunities for nice contrast in colors and great shadows.

I used a polarizer which deepened the color of the sky.

We saw tracks of lots of animals. These are probably from the
deer who roam the Arboretum grounds.

Steaming Cup of Tea

This morning, I noticed the steam rising from my cup of freshly brewed green tea. Since I had never photographed steam, I thought I'd give it a try. I moved the cup so the background would be the red of my dining room wallpaper. Moving the cup around the room, it became clear that the steam needs to be lit from the side to be most visible, which in my case, was the filtered light coming through the window coverings. I tried different apertures and shutter speeds and determined the cup and the stream need to be in focus but that the background was more pleasing blurred since there was a pattern on the wallpaper that competed with the steam. Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Garden - Visit When the Snow Falls

It doesn't get much better than taking photos when snow has fallen. It snowed most of the day in Kansas City, so not surprisingly, I bundled up, checked my camera battery to make sure it was charged and my compact flash to make sure I had space for new photos and off I went to one of my favorite places - the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. Photography in the Arboretum is fun any day of the year, with so much diversity of subject matter. But when it snows, there are few people who venture out so you can commune with nature in solitude.

Here are a few photos from today. Enjoy - maybe I'll see you at the Arboretum during the next snowfall!

Margaret's Pond is nearly frozen. Native grasses are beautiful in the winter,
providing color and texture to the landscape

With the cloudy sky, snow scenes are a study in white, with the darkness
of the trees punctuating the landscape.

I am always attracted to reflections.

Virgin snow surrounding the benches. I used a shallow depth of field to gradually
blur the benches. I was using my 50mm lens at f 1.8. I focused on the near arm rest.
The shutter speed was 1/3200 sec with an ISO of 125. You have to overexpose
a snow scene (if it is predominantly snow) because a camera's meter will always try
to make an image middle grey. If you shoot in RAW, you can make the exposure
adjustment in Adobe Camera Raw, which is what I did.

When I was adjusting exposure in ACR, I clicked on "auto" and the scene
turned to sepia. I liked the look, with the red tree. It's subjective.

Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Garden in Winter - Still Beautiful!

I taught a class today on Basic Photoshop today at the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. After the class, I took a stroll in 24 degree weather to check out the frozen pond. I love the Arboretum at any time of the year but particularly like to visit and photograph in winter. It is so serene during the cold months and today was no different. It has been cold in Kansas City, so Margaret's pond was mostly frozen. If you live in Kansas City, it's worth it to bundle up in the winter and visit the Arboretum.

More on depth of field

On the Santa photos taken earlier this week, I was demonstrating the "background blur" effect of using different sized apertures to photograph a flat Santa, placing Santa different distances from the background and the camera different distances from Santa. In those photos, it was the effect of the blurred lights in the background that was more important than the Santa.

The photo below show the same depth of field blurred effect. However, in this photo, Kauffman's face is the focal point. The background, including the rest of his body, is not important.

In the photo below, the blur on Carmello's nose is a little distracting, so a slightly smaller aperture or moving the camera farther back would have brought his nose more into focus. The background, however, (someone's legs) would have been totally distracting had it been in focus (a photographer takes what is given to her with a dog!).

Useful photography technique: you can use a blurred background as:

(1) an important part of the photo, such as softly blurred Christmas lights;

(2) to de-emphasize an unimportant part of the scene;

(3) to emphasize an important feature, such as eyes

Depth of field - looking at f-stops

Below are two set of three photos each, taken at different f-stops and distances from the background and subject. Compare these to yesterday's photos and you'll see the difference it makes as you close your aperture. The first set of three was taken at f 4.5 (compared to yesterday's photos taken at f 1.4) The second set of photos was taken at f 9. Many cameras/lenses don't open wider than f 4, so it's difficult to get the softly blurred background shown in yesterday's photos.

A Year of Photos

Now that I'm able to spend more time as a photographer, I made a New Year resolution to post a photo a day (with technical information about how the photo was made for my photographer friends and those who want to learn more about photography). Considering its already January 4th and I've posted no photos, it seems my resolution is slipping already. So, maybe the resolution is better stated as "trying to take a photo a day and posting when I get the chance".

Below are my first batch of photos. In these I have focused on using a wide open aperture on my 50mm Zeiss lens that opens to a 1.4 f-stop to show the variations in the depth of field, depending on distance of the camera from the subject matter (when the focal length of the lens (50mm) and the aperture (f1.4) have not changed). For those new to photography, "depth of field" is the range of distances over which objects appear acceptably sharp. Depth of field is a complex subject and is dependent on the focal length of the lens, the aperture and the distance from the subject. I will focus on depth of field in my first few posts.

The photos below were taken of a wooden Santa in front of my Christmas tree. The details of the distance from the tree is noted below each photo. As you can see, the farther the subject is away from the background, the more the background becomes blurred.

Useful photography technique: If you are taking photos of a subject and want the background blurred and you have a camera/lens that allows you to choose a wide aperture, take a photo, check the image and background to see if you captured the look you wanted. If not, move the subject further away from the background. If part of the subject is blurred, choose a less wide aperture and/or move back from the subject. Check the image again to make sure you got the look you wanted.

Plaza Lights in Kansas City

We took our niece, who is interested in photography, on a photo shoot of the Country Club Plaza lights tonight. We got there in time to get some twilight photos. Twilight, for you photographers, is the half hour before sunrise and after sunset. No matter the weather conditions, the sky will photograph a brilliant blue during those times.

Below are some of the pics I took. Of course we took a Topsy's popcorn and Starbuck's hot chocolate break mid-way through the photo shoot!

Our Pups 2010 Christmas

We enjoy sharing Christmas Day with our furry friends. Each Christmas, we loosely wrap a couple of toys for each pup in tissue paper. Our pup, Camden, who crossed the Rainbow bridge two years ago, knew when we placed the dog presents under the tree. Whether Camden smelled the toys or knew that tissue paper wrapping meant TOYS, we don't know but he literally would stake out the tree when the presents appeared, patiently waiting for the DAY.

We have never had a present "opener" like Camden. He got the hang of freeing the toy the first year he lived with us. Our other pups let him do the honors and then would steal the toys.

Our new little puppy, Kauffman, kind of got the hang of it this year but Fenway and Rosa didn't. They let us and Kauffman do the honors.

We missed having Hanny with us this year but know she and Camden were watching from the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

Border Terrier Fenway & Santa

Okay, okay, I admit I'm the kind of person who puts a holiday collar on my pup and takes him to visit Santa. However, I have an excuse this time. Fenway participated in a fundraiser for the Humane Society, so it was for a good cause.

Fenway is my "heart" dog. He turned 14 years old in October and we are so thankful we have had the privilege of being owned by him for all these 14 years. He was my agility dog in his early years and he had a blast running through tunnels, jumping over hurdles and just plain running fast. He was very fast. But being a terrier, he thought for himself and there were days he'd stray off the course looking for mice or chips of horse poo (most of the agility competitions were in horse barns). I never figured out what the allure of the horse poo was - but he loved it!

My trainer used to ask if Fenway was going to run on any given day or was his "evil twin" present. The evil twin was slow and always ran off course but brought lots of laughs.

Fen is a lot slower these days and spends a lot of time snuggled in his bed. However, he loved his visit to Santa where he got lots of attention. He's a very amiable dog and nothing fazes him. We walked around the Plaza after the Santa visit and were even invited into the Kansas City Store to buy a barbecue cookbook. The store is "dog friendly" and has amazing merchandise.

Cookie Party!

Kids at Christmas - does it get any better? These little ones love the annual Christmas party at their aunt and uncle's house. It's a night of excess in the sugar department but well worth it for the smiles it brings to those of us who are young at heart, if not in age.

The musical reindeer kept the kids entertained all night. It's a season of simple pleasures.

Does it get any better than a snuggle with grandma?

Four out of five isn't bad. The fifth never slowed down all night.

Senior Photos at English Landing Park

I don't do many senior photos but a friend asked me if I would photograph her son. We were about 6 months past due for the photos session for many reasons but were able to take advantage of the beautiful and unseasonably warm late November day in Kansas City. My friend's son is now a university of Kansas Jayhawk and was wearing his team's colors. We had a blast.

Overland Park Arboretum Luminary Walk 2010

Today was the first of four nights for the holiday luminary walk at the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. Despite a winter chill in the air, the event was well attended by families who bundled up, including lots of little ones in their strollers. I heard more than one family saying they have made this a tradition. I've been photographing the event for three years now and it gets more and more beautiful each year.

There is a lot for "big ones" and "little ones" to enjoy - including a lit maze and tunnel, a gingerbread house, hot apple cider and caroling in front of a bon fire. As you walk through the lighted woods, you may hear the melodic sounds of the flute player and the carolers.

Come on out - the event will be held tomorrow night, November 27th and next Friday, December 3rd and Saturday, December 4th from 5:00 - 8:30.

Also, for you photographers, you can get the beautiful cobalt blue sky by using a tripod and shooting within the first half hour after sunset (about 5:00-5:30).

We've had an unseasonably late fall in Kansas City. Here it is mid-November and we still have beautiful fall foliage. What a surprise and delight!

I've known this little boy since his birth - literally, since I had the privilege of photographing his birth. I can't believe how much time has flown. He's nearly 19 months old and cute as a button. A daredevil too - he climbed to the top of the slide and was fearless!

His sister is such a cutie too. Her curls are all natural and just beautiful. Plus, her smile lights up the room. What sweet kids!

Fall Foliage in Kansas

I had the pleasure of photographing a multigenerational family yesterday. We took the photos in fabulous Antioch Park which is showing its fall colors. The kids were great during the photo shoot, looking forward to playing in the park's playground afterwards.

It was so much fun taking photos of mom, dad, the kids, their uncle and grandma and grandpa. Photos are are so important for lasting memories and I was privileged to photograph this fun family.

The Splendor of Charlottesville, Virginia

We attended a family wedding in Charlottesville, Virginia last weekend. What a fabulous area of the country! We flew into Baltimore and drove down Skyline Drive in the Blue Ridge mountains. Although it was supposed to be peak season for fall foliage, we only saw a sprinkling of reds and yellows. Nevertheless, the drive is always stunning.

One of the scenic overlooks on the drive intersected with the famed Appalachian Trail. We were shocked to see how narrow the trail is, plus, although you can't get the full sense from this photo, the trail is exceptionally rocky and steep. We had a friend who was going to hike the trail a few years back and he had to quit after a day because his feet could take the rocky pounding.

Since we got into Charlottesville a day before other family, we visited Thomas Jefferson's home of Monticello (on the back of the nickel). The plantation tour was fascinating. To think that Jefferson believed that all men are created equal but only freed about 5 of his hundred slaves, three of whom were freed in his will. Putting the slavery issue aside, though, he was a visionary. The features in Monticello were many years ahead of the time.

Plus, Jefferson was famed for his knowledge of gardening. The gardens were immense and the vistas were stunning. We purchased some Monticello seeds for lettuce and a few other vegetables to grow in our garden next year. (Note, the color temperature change in the photos. The top photos was was taken in the morning and the lower one was taken as the sun was lower in the sky and more golden.)

The morning of the wedding 10-10-10, we strolled around the campus of the University of Virginia, also designed by Jefferson. The campus is idyllic with an immense center lawn. One fun factoid - the dorm rooms that face the lawn are highly sought after, even though the students who use these rooms have to go outside, around the building and down one level to shower and use the restroom!

I couldn't pass up the opportunity to photograph the spiffy pink bicycle, no doubt owned by the captain of the football team.

The late afternoon wedding, the first of the next generation, was lovely. It was help on the grounds of Ashlawn-Highland, President James Monroe's estate. While not nearly as grand as Monticello, it was still in a beautiful setting. The weather was perfect and a fun time was had by all. Of note- the bride and groom, who met at the University of Virginia and love the area, which was hosting an apple festival the weekend of the wedding, chose to have freshly prepared apple donuts as their "wedding cake". I have to admit, they were the best donuts I've ever tasted.

Overland Park Arboretum Arts for Kids

Saturday I was a volunteer photographer for Arts for Kids, an annual two-day event each October at the Overland Park Arboretum. The weather was great all weekend - blue skies, no humidity and crisp fall weather.

The kids love this event, where they can make all sorts of crafts from nature's fall bounty. Decorating hedgeapples is always a highlight. This year they had a hay ride, a straw maze for the little ones to run through, a snake from the Kansas City zoo to pet, story tellers, music from the Kansas City Symphony and a bell choir. The choir let the kids try their hands with the bells. A tinkling rendition of "Row, row, row your boat" played by the kids was enjoyed by all.

Below are a few photos. The purpose of the photos is for next year's publicity for the event and the Arboretum, so I haven't included any of the kids that are identifiable. I loved coming across the kids rolling down the teepee hill. Does it get any better? Also, the little guy ringing the bells had his hair sprayed green - one of the activities the kids could enjoy!

Overland Park Arboretum 2010 Golf Tournament

Yesterday was a day of firsts for me - my first time on a golf course and my first time photographing a golf event. Luckily, I was shepherded around the golf course by a very knowledgeable golfer. Had he not given me expert guidance, I have no doubt I would have annoyed many golfers with my etiquette failures.

It was a beautiful fall day in Kansas, clear blue sky (challenging for photos due to the high contrast), high 70's and just a little wind. The course was lovely - a city course owned by Overland Park, Kansas.

To top the day off, my sister won a nice tv in the raffle. I had hoped to win the iPad, but no such luck. But, at the live auction of sports memorabilia, I did snag a signed George Brett baseball bat for Bob, who was also a volunteer photographer at the event. He was thrilled.

The pup, so cute and engaging, was a rescue dog looking for a new home and, happily found one with one of the golfers.

A Walk for Suicide Awareness

On Sunday, my sister, brother and I attended the Kansas City Suicide Awareness walk in beautiful Loose Park. It was a very peaceful and inspiring ceremony. The names of loved ones lost to suicide were read and at the end of a song about loss, white doves were released to the skies.

We received carnations at the walk and after, placed them at Crystal's grave. Crystal, we miss you.

Fenway and Millie - July 2010

My sister's Border "Millie" was my introduction to Border Terriers. She is my
dog Fenway's half sibling - same mother, different dads.

Mille was the sweetest little dog, very mellow. We always laughed that she was
raised by my sister's older Lab. However, she was a real huntress - the terrier
came out when she saw critters invade her yard. The nerve!

She was diagnosed with Cushings at age 8 but did well on meds my sister imported
from England.

She started going deaf at age 11 and really heard very little the last year or
so, except when the dinner dishes rattled. A true Border!

She started having accidents in the house regularly a few months ago and was
diagnosed with bladder cancer a few weeks ago. Her zest for life faded away
over the last few weeks and my sister and her husband made the tough decision
with the vet's advice to send her over the rainbow bridge where she could run
free. Her Lab sister Sandy, who tragically died a couple of months ago of
Exercise Induced Collapse syndrome, was waiting to meet her.

I told my sister that all the Borders who have crossed would be there for her
too. Bless you Millie - you were a wonderful pup. Catch all the critters you
want and pal around with Sable, Sandy, Camden and Brett, your buddies from KC.

Visitors from St. Louis

My nephew, Sean, Mandy and their sons, as well as my sister and her husband visited a couple of weekends ago. The focal point of the weekend was a big surprise for Sean from Mandy - a ride-along in an Indy car at the Kansas Speedway.

The whole family was looking forward to seeing our St. Louis visitors, including dad and Delia and Liz, my stepsister, who came into town.

The surprise was kept well. My sister's husband told Sean that there was a GTO show at the Speedway he was driving his restored 1967 GTO into town for. He and my sister braved 90+ degree weather, driving across I-70 from St. Louis to KC with no air conditioning - that's love for you!

We all got to the speedway, where Sean, truly surprised, signed in and then waited in line for 1 1/2 hours only to have the event cancelled due to rain. The good news is that he got a gift certificate for a future ride. All in all, we had a great time. The Speedway is fascinating. My great-nephew was enthralled with the Indy cars and we all got a good weekend of visiting in.

Book Review: Quite a Sightly Place: A Family Dairy Farm in Vermont

Here is a link to a review of a book written by one of my photography instructors. During the workshop I took two years ago in Vermont, a highlight was being allowed to roam for a day and a half across the lovely dairy farm David Middleton features in his book. We met Roger, Hugh and others featured in the book. If you are considering taking a photogrpahy workshop, I can't recommend David highly enough. He was recommended to me by a former student of his and he did not disappoint as an instructor.

Below are some photos I took at the farm. It was such an amazing, diverse place and every bit as scenic as you would think a dairy farm in Vermont should be.

Advanced Flower Photography Class at Overland Park Arboretum

I had a blast yesterday teaching an advanced flower photography class at the Overland Park Arboretum. It was a class I designed for photographers who are already using an SLR. The folks who took the class were a good group with lots of questions. The Overland Park Arboretum is a hidden jewel of Kansas City. Here are a few of the photos, taken at the Arboretum, of course. For those interested, the focal length of the lens, the aperture and shutter speed, as well as ISO is listed on each photo.

La Vie en Rose

We have added a new pup to our lives. La Vie en Rose (aka "Rosa"), a Norfolk Terrier, flew from her home in Syracuse, NY with Bob to Kansas City on Wednesday. She is two and one-half years old and joins her Norfolk buddy, one year old Kauffman, and her two Border Terrier, buddies Fenway (age 13) and Hanover (age 10).

Rosa came to us as a surprise, when a friend had to re-home her. When we were asked a few weeks ago if we wanted to add Rosa to our lives, we talked about it at length. Adding a fourth dog to the pack is not something done lightly.

As we discussed it, I looked up to the heavens and asked Camden our Norfolk who is on the other side of the rainbow bridge to give us a sign if adding Rosa to our lives would be the right thing to do. The next day, I was going through some 1998 gardening magazines and opened to an article called "La Vie en Rose" about a garden in Norfolk England. It was the sign we needed. Strangely enough, the woman sitting across the aisle from Bob on the flight to KC with Rosa was from Norfolk, England. It was meant to be.

Rosa is a very, very sweet little girl who loves the ladies. She would be content to sit on my lap all day.

Sadness

My 19 year old niece died tragically on Sunday May 17, 2010. Last week was the longest week of my entire life. I don't know how my brother, his ex-wife and her husband had the courage and strength to bury their daughter. The family misses her terribly and there will always be a hole in our hearts that can never be filled. Crystal, watch over your dad, mom, stepdad, sister, brother, family and friends from heaven.

Below are two photos my brother asked me to take at the candlelight vigil held by Crystal's friends, some of whom call my brother "dad". It was moving and started the healing process for my brother.

Long, Long Winter

This has been the longest winter I can remember since my childhood. It has been snowing all day once again and here it is March 20th, the first day of Spring. Not even the forsythias, which usually bloom the weekend of the Big 12 basketball tournament, have made an appearance.

The Norfolk terrier puppy, Kauffman, went out first thing and promptly started to dig under the new snow into the freshly laid dirt that was brought in this week to finish off the landscape grading after last year's remodel.

I'm letting him out on a lead now, so all he can do is sit at the door and wistfully remember the early morning hours of digging - for the resident mole I assume.

"Fenway the Elder", a Border terrier, wants none of the snow and would prefer to snuggle in his. bed.

"Hanny Bannany", our little girl Border terrier, is in between, not minding the snow, particularly with her jeans jacket to stay warm but liking the snuggling she can get inside on my lap. She is doing pretty well, considering she has bladder cancer. We're hoping all the home-cooked meals and flax seed diet are helping. It's been two months since her tumor was discovered. To keep her hydrated, we give her and the other dogs yogurt and crushed ice smoothies, with blueberries mixed in.

Please, Mother Nature, I'm begging you - warm up so I can use the new porch that I can only look at from the warmth of the new sunroom.

It Is I, Kauffman, Snow Dog of Kansas

I heard on the news today that my birthplace, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C., is going to get 20 inches of snow. Well, we didn't get that much snow in Kansas today but I want my Maryland relatives to know that I, Kaufmann, am a true snow dog.

Since I wanted to play outside all day, my dad decided to make a snowman. All three of us pups liked the snowman, particularly me.

Here I am trying my darndest to get that pineapple mouth.

I could see that Hanny had her eyes on the yummy pineapple. I can jump really high. But, I couldn't jump high enough to get it. Luckily, dad didn't let Hanny eat it.

I also liked it when dad threw the snowballs. I tried to jump high and catch them. I am a real acrobat. I think I would make a good frisbee dog. You can see in the second picture that I caught it. Wow, was it icy and cold!

I kept a close watch on that snowman after dad made us go into the house. I was looking out the window after dinner and discovered that the pineapple mouth had fallen to the ground. Just so you know, we Norfolk terriers are scavengers and never pass up food. My ancestors used to be barn dogs and had to find their own meals, usually rats. So....... my instincts took over. I faked having to go potty, ran outside and gobbled the pineapple, as my mom (who has been using a cane, so couldn't come outside to get me) tried to call me in. I know better and go DEAF when it's convenient. She would have taken that tasty pineapple away from me. Yum, it was good and I didn't share with Hanny or Fen.

Mom has been really sad she hasn't been able to get outside during the winter snows and foggy days to use her camera. So, today, she took it with her on a short ride and said she played around with slow shutter speeds as she sat in the moving car. Kind of fun.

I hope all my relatives in Maryland have as much fun in the snow as I did, particularly my mom Geordie.

Our Hanny

We learned last week that our little girl Border terrier, age 10, has bladder cancer. We are devastated. She began her journey with the Fowler family, as our daughter Amy's dog. However, when Amy moved to an apartment during Hanover's first year, she liked to "sing" when Amy was gone. A Border terrier's singing is a cross between a yodel and a howl - and is LOUD. After the Apartment manager asked a friend of Amy's to go into the apartment to check on Hanny, only to discover that all Hanny wanted was company, she moved to our house, where she became a member of the Fenway and Camden pack.

We think the cancer is in early stages, being only 1 cm in size. However, it is a metastatic cancer and will grow and spread. She is on a medication that has helped some dogs' cancer slow. We are hoping we have her for many more months but are showering her with even more love and affection than normal.

Both Fenway (age 13) and Kauffman (age 10 months) sense something is wrong. However, they like the home cooked meals they are getting to help Hanny's kidneys function better.

To have two dogs get two different types of cancer in less than 18 months is baffling. Although we have always fed high quality prescription foods we got at the vets, they had lots of chemicals and preservatives. We've switched to home cooked or all natural dog foods in the hope we can avoid having this happen again, particularly with the puppy.

I just love this photo, taken a few nights ago. Hanny is always cold in the winter, so wears sweaters. Someone visited in January and when he saw her in this pink and green glittery sweater, he exclaimed "Are you going out tonight" to Hanny. What a cute, sweet little girl. Of all our pups, she is the one who just wants to love and cuddle. We can do that!

P.S. I am recovering from my knee surgery fine and will return to work next week after an 8 1/2 week absence. We are working on long dormant quadriceps muscles in physical therapy. The progress is slower than I had thought it would be but it was liberating graduating to a cane recently.

Sisters on a Beautiful Fall Day!

Finally, some beautiful fall days! We had a miserable October in Kansas City -- rainy and cold. We went for one stretch of 15 days without seeing a ray of sunshine.

The good news is that the cold, wet autumn has given us the most beautiful fall we've had for years. The colors were gorgeous and the leaves stayed on the trees in full color for several weeks.

Our department at work had a silent auction last year so we could adopt a family for Christmas (great idea by the way - lots of fun things to buy and all for a good cause!). One of my contributions was a photo-shoot. We thought we'd never get it in, with me being in a walking boot for most of August, September and part of October, and the cold, dreary October weather.

However, Mother Nature surprised us and gave us a fabulous weekend for the first weekend in November -- great for fall photography.

The girls' pup is a best friend and a wonder dog. A few years ago, brand new to the family, she located their grandparents' dog who had been missing for over a week. It's an amazing story.

We are having so much fun with Kauffman. The two older dogs are bonding with him very well and we are thrilled by that. Kauffman is growing like a weed and is venturing further and further into the gardens each day to explore. He still likes to stay near Hanny but isn't totally attached at the hip anymore. I'm having way too much fun taking photos.

Kauffman learned last week to climb the dog stairs we got a while back to help the oldsters climb on the bed - I know -- some of you are thinking Yuk! But, once he figured out the stairs he figured out that he could look down on the other two, who tend to curl up on the rug at the foot of the bed. I think we have an alpha in the making!

He often lays just his head on the big fluffy dog pillow. We're not sure why.

The Life of Pups

Kauffman and the other two pups are settling in together nicely. Kauffman is Hanny's shadow when they are outside, intently watching everything she does, including the hunting of critters. They play tug and wrestle with each other several times a day, having a blast.

It's taken Fenway a little longer to decide to engage Kauffman in play. The game Fen and Cam played went like this:

Fen would play bow with a toy in his mouth and Cam would snarl at him with tail wagging and chase him across the room, play biting at Fen's tucked rear. We called it the "tuck your butt and run game".

Fenway has initiated the game with Kauffman and can get Kauffman to chase him but Kauffman catches Fen and tries to bite the toy. Fen gets frustrated and looks at us as if to say "he doesn't get it does he!" They'll work out a game. We're just glad that Fenway is engaging with Kauffman, who is a typical puppy "brat" at times, nipping and yipping. Fenway, as the nearly 13 year old "oldster", has little patience at times and moves to another room.

Kauffman is growing and weighed 6.9 lbs yesterday, so has gained nearly a pound since he came home with us. He is so, so smart and is learning from the other two dogs. We once put Hanny in a down and looked over and who was in a down but the Little K!

We are having a blast with our newest family member.

Kauffman's Home!!

Kauffman arrived in Kansas City last night at 10:00 pm. It was absolute chaos when we introduced him to Fenway and Hanover. The two older dogs were in a high state of excitement and Kauffman was on overload. After an hour, we decided it was best to retire for the night. Today it's been a lot calmer and all pups are bonding. There have been several tug toy games between Kauffman and Hanover. Fenway is till trying to figure out how best to play with him.

Kauffman is one happy, smart, inquisitive, fearless little pup. The eight steps from the family room to the kitchen were daunting to him last night. I helped him up one time and that's all it took. He has been running up the stairs (not down yet) at full speed. Not bad for an 11-week old puppy.

Just like a small child, everything is going straight to his mouth. We're headed to the pet store to get some teething toys.

A Gift from Over the Rainbow Bridge

Today is an exciting day - we're getting an 11 week old Norfolk puppy. You may recall that Camden, our Norfolk terrier died unexpectedly last October after a diagnosis of lymphoma and two surgeries in three days. Camden's loss was traumatic for all of us. I no longer cry crocodile tears when I think about him but tears well up in my eyes at least once a week when thoughts of him cross my mind. Fenway is nearly back to his old self but he has taken the long journey in recovery.

Kauffman, or as he's been dubbed by me "Little K", will never replace Camden but we hope he brings the pure joy of living to our lives that Camden brought. Bob is on the Eastern Shore of Maryland tonight, after having picked Kauffman up from his breeder on Kent Island. The breeder called Kauffman "the little lover", which is funny, since that was one of Camden's nicknames.

A friend told me after Camden died that he would send the right puppy to us at the right time. She was right. Camden gave us the gift of Kauffman on Bob's birthday when we received the news that we had been chosen as the forever home for one of the two puppies born in the litter. It's been a long two months waiting to meet Little K but Bob says when he met him for the first time today, he was immediately showered in puppy kisses.

Camden - you did good! Watch over Little K and Fenway and Hanover from the other side of the rainbow bridge and sprinkle them with your zest for life. Thank you little man.

P.S While you're at it, Cam, you might teach the puppy how to play the chase Fenway game. He misses tucking his butt and running, with you barking, chasing and pretend nipping. Hanny won't play this game at all!

He's Home!

It is absolutely amazing how quickly babies grow. This little guy is only 3 1/2 weeks old and looks so much bigger than the day he was born. Being naked was not his favorite thing! Although mom and dad said he always sleeps after he eats, he resisted the urge today. We were able to get a few sleeping baby shots but most of the time, he wanted to check everyone out.

His sister is a real cutie too!

What a great family! It was a pleasure to spend time having fun with the kids today and I thank them all!

We got to spend a fun afternoon with family. I was playing with my camera and a new lens, so couldn't resist taking some fun photos of my very cute nieces and nephews.

The new lens has an aperture of 1.4, so I played around shooting wide open quite a bit today. It's a lot more challenging than I thought trying to get exact focus with an aperture that wide! But, the nicely blurred backgrounds more than make up for the challenge!

We're hoping we soon get some real May weather. It's been chilly and very rainy. I don't think we've gone for more then four days without rain for the last month! I'm not sure global warming has come to the midwest.

I had the privilege of photographing the birth of my friends' new baby, Luke. He was born a little after 10:00 am today. I told his parents I would put a few images on the blog for a sneak peak. I know dad will be e-mailing more!

This little girl has a baby brother coming soon. She can already say "baby" and "brother", so she's well on her way to being a great big sister!

Oh, the indignity our dogs have to endure to lead comfy lives with us humans. Year after year, when holiday time arrives, the poor pups are dressed in jingle bell collars and reindeer antlers, or other festive attire. Hanover sits in her garb motionless, just sure something terrible will happen if she moves. We release her from her anguish and utter embarrassment quickly after a photo is taken.

Fenway, on the other hand, will let us dress him up in anything, just as long as there's a treat involved. This year it was lamb jerky. He was so obsessed with the "bestest" treat ever that he wouldn't look at the camera -- the treat was being offered as a bribe to the left of the camera position. I suggested I put the treat between my lips to get him to look at me but that idea was quickly nixed when he kept jumping at the camera!

All in all the pups and their human family enjoyed the Christmas festivities, particularly since my sister from St. Louis and her husband made a surprise visit to KC to join us for dinner. It doesn't get better than having family together for the holiday season!

Christmas Memories of Camden

In October, I blogged about our three dogs, Fenway, Camden and Hanover. Ten days after my post we lost Camden following two abdominal surgeries in three days and a diagnosis of lymphoma. His little body just wasn't strong enough to recover, although he fought with all his might.

Today, I'm writing in Camden's memory - Christmas was his all time favorite holiday. He knew when the tree went up that good things were coming in tissue wrapped packages. Christmas morning, he would be beside himself waiting for the gift opening -- he knew he always got a few dog toys wrapped in tissue paper. To see Cam open his presents was a delight. Of all the dogs, he best knew how to rip the tissue and get to the gift. Cam treasured his soft toys. Often, we would find him laying with his head on his newest soft toy (probably to make sure neither of the other two dogs would take it).

One of our funniest stories is the year Camden kept pulling a gift from a friend out from under the tree and tearing at it. We couldn't figure out why since he never bothered any present wrapped in regular wrapping paper. On Christmas morning, we discovered the box he had been trying to open was filled with tissue - he must have smelled the tissue and thought the box was an early gift for him!

Below is a short video of Cam eagerly trying to get to his presents on Christmas morning last year (with Fenway coming into the picture at the end) and some snapshots of all three pups.

Cam, we all miss you greatly but we know you're celebrating Christmas on the other side of the rainbow bridge, where there are as many presents as you want under the beautiful trees. Open them with joy and when you tire, lay your head on the softest and dream sweet dreams. You are with us today and always little man. We love you.

You can see Camden's paw, where he is missing two toes - the result of surgery he had when he was five - the vets at K-State, particularly Dr. Chad Johannes, saved his life when he got a mysterious disease dissolving his toe bones - they gave us another 6 wonderful years with Camden. We are eternally grateful to Dr. Johannes and K-State's vet school for all they did for Camden.

Big brother wasn't so sure he wanted to hold his sister but a little cajoling worked and we got one brother sister photo!

The kids didn't need any encouragement to do what kids do - climb trees. This little sister goes full speed, matching her big brothers step for step.

The unique personalities of each of these kids was evident through the session. I've had the fun of photographing them several times and it's fun watching them grow up.

This brother and sister were so full of energy and clearly enjoy being with each other. Between climbing trees and running through the park, they sat still long enough to give each other hugs. It was a blast spending time with them.

These sisters were a delight to spend an afternoon with. They both were bubbling with personality and fun. This last photo has special meaning for the family. The tree was given as a gift many years ago and as it grows, so do the girls. An annual photo in front of the tree is a must-have!

Fenway, a Border terrier, is in back. Camden, a Norfolk terrier, is in front.

Fen is nearly 12 and Cam is 11 1/2. Could you guess that we're a baseball lovin' family!

These pups are so much fun. The energy of a terrier is boundless and the personality of these two can't be matched.

P.S Ten days after I wrote the above note about my pups, Camden passed away after surgery and a diagnosis of lymphoma. He was with us, sitting on my lap, surrounded by his family, both human and pups, when he crossed the rainbow bridge. You are greatly missed little man.

Hanover is also a Border terrier. She is 8. Her expression says it all - "With all these feathers, I feel like a bird!" Actually, the costume was for a Border Terrier Fun Day contest and she was one of the winners!
